Forum Post: bq27510-g3 learning cycle

Hi ,

We performed Learning Cycle for bq27510-G3. We had done this before with G2. Based on one of the forums, we can reuse calibration values of the G2 for the G3 (they will be used in the same product).

We had proceeded with the learning cycle and generated the dfi. After generating the dfi, we had also "read" the the values to senc file (I2C).

Then using another Fuel Gauge, we programmed using the dfi but was shown, "Problem with the DFI".

During the Configure phase of the Characterization, we had encountered Error:Could not find subclass and offset for Gas Gauging.IT Cfg.Reserve Cap-mWh

based from this forum link: http://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/battery_management/f/180/p/315386/1208546.aspx it is a bug of the bqeasy and we chould just proceed with the characterization.

In addition, during the update of the Golden Pack, an error popped us stating Error: Could not find subclass and offset for Gas Gauging.State.Cell0 Chg dod at EoC however, despite of this error popping, the software continued and generated the dfi file. So I had assumed that this is another bug in the software.

We are planning to conduct another learning cycle as soon as possible but we cannot proceed unless we had a solution to the error. Has anyone experienced the same thing with G3? How was this resolved?

Thanks,

Kat

Having investigated further, the pack will recover with 10mA, but there is another device run from the battery (DRV2605) which is drawing the lion's share of the 10mA and preventing the pack from recovering.

Looking at the datasheet there is no way to adjust the 10mA level for the BQ24055 so I have modified the circuit to disconnect the DRV2605 when the cell voltage drops though this does increase BOM cost.

Hello,

Sorry again.
I found the bq24115 which has CMODE pin.
This device has ISET1 for charge and ISET2 for precharge and we can set the mode by CMODE.

Can I use these device without precharge if we set  always high to CMODE with Standalone mode?

Best Regards,
Ryuji

When the system is being powered solely from the battery (i.e., no input power to the IC or the IC is in HiZ mode), this PFET, in parallel with the IC's internal battery FET, provide a lower resistance discharge path from the battery to the system than the internal battery FET would provide alone.  There is no need for a pullup resistor because the PFET's body diode connect the battery to SYS, thereby providing a drive voltage at the source.  A pull down resistor is also not required.

Yes, the TS is properly biased.  I do not know what the configuration of the protection circuit.

Matteo,
Here is some information on the land pattern for this device.

There is no update to the referenced application note that includes gas gauging. TI does not currently offer an automotive gas gauge IC. Typically, automotive customers wish to develop their own SoC and SoH algorithms for EV use.The algorithms can be very complex and form significant IP for the automotive OEM.

Lois,

The Input Offset for the coulomb counter is 10uV (typ), so a 0.3 mohm resistor will limit the minimum current that the device can measure to around 33mA.

Forum Post: BQ24210 -- Large capacity battery charging

Hi Team,

I have an application where I want to charge a very high capacity battery (~10-15Ah) from a ~20-V/1.5-W PV cell.

I was looking at bq24210 but noticed a forum thread saying the pre-charge safety timer might be an issue with a low charge rate on large batteries.

How would the pre-charge safety timer cause an issue with large battery packs?  Is there a device that I can use instead of the bq24210?

Also, would a bq24210 charge any lithium chemistry pack?  Example: LiSOCl or LiSO2

The charger would also need to be qualified for a -40 to 85 C range.

Hi Team,

I have an application where a single charge in a pack is expected to last 7 to 8 years in a device that is located outdoors which means it will be subject to seasonal temperature fluctuations.

Would the DOD, SOC, or TTE values fluctuate drastically due to pack temperature?

The concern is, if the gas gauge is queried in the summer, it will give a different TTE/DOD/SOC than if it is queried in the winter.

Also, is there a way to disable under-voltage protection for the bq27742 device?

Damian,

The first two Ra grid points are way out of line. We will need to know at what point that get so large. You could try changing these parameters back to their normal values to see if this corrects the problem. It will probably take additional cycles and data collection to determine how the values are getting so large.

Tom,

Based on Figure 10 in the bqMTester user guide , there is an option to seal the pack upon completion.

I do not have any other tools except for the bqMTester and the bqEVSW. It seems that I will have to work around on using the bqEVSW to Enable IT and seal the device. Will also try to research on other methods to communicate with my the device through SMB.

Do you have any recommendation on the tools or alternative methods?

Dear Wenija,

thanks for your response. Can you please give me a reference where the requirement of VBAT > 3.4 V for charger detection is stated?

What's the purpose of this requirement?

Thanks

Martin

Hi TI team,

My customer looking for battery protection for lithium ion with spec Over charge voltage 3,65V dan Over discharge voltage 2.5 V.

the closest part, I found BQ29706 the spec charge voltage 3.850V dan Over discharge voltage 2.5 V unfortunately customer still not accept.

please kindly advise if any other solutions to meet with requirement

Thanks very much for extremely prompt reply, Thomas.  Yes I do realise this - I have calculated that combined error and resolution could be up to 80mA, which is a little problematic for us, but probably bearable.  I just wanted to be sure that such a small resistance setting was possible because the datasheet suggested not, so this is actually very good news.

Damian,

The device does not interpret mAh as cWh when you scale the current. It still thinks that you have a 4100 mAh pack. If you had the Design Energy scale set to 1, then the Design Energy would be 17220 mWh.

I have seen people use the max voltage and other use the design voltage (3.6V) for the calculation. I have not seen it make much difference.

Ganesh,

REG08 (System Status Register) shows that you are in DPM regulation. Please try lowering REG00 [3:6] from 5.0V to the default value of 4.36V (0110).

Let me know if that helps!

Thanks,

Rachel
