Forum Post: Trying to achieve a successful learning cycle with bq27510-G3, bq24075 charger and 700mAh Liion battery

 Hello,

I am using SLUA597 for guidance. I discharged my battery (chem 1173) to 3000mV and waited 5 hours for it to fully relax. Using GaugeStudio, I execute the IT_Enable command. SLUA597 says that RUP_DIS should be cleared, VOK and QEN should be set. My results are always with the three flags clear both before and after this command is sent. I have tried this by charging and discharging at about C/5 several times with the same negative results. I haven't logged the test because I can see the result right from the gaugestudio console and don't know what else to look for anyway. Please, any suggestions where to go from here are appreciated.  BTW, there is an undefined register flag bit labeled TOR that is undefined in the bq27510 data sheet. It is active (green) -what does it mean?

Forum Post: RE: bq20z60 sleep and shutdown modes

Hi Onyx,

I have seen that the battery is sending out some data through SMBus every minute even if is connected or not.

Do you know why this could happen?

I have tried to enter in Shutdown mode with this condition:

• (ManufacturerAccess shutdown command received AND Current = 0) AND PackVoltage <

Charger Present threshold.

Current and PackVoltage conditions are fullfilled. I have also looked at the SMBus communication signals and checked that the ManufacturerAccess command is correct.

So there seems to be something in the ManufacturerAccess criteria that is wrong or missing, or maybe the command is somehow overridden by the mysterious data sent from the battery.

Looking fordward to hearing from you.

Best regards.

Borja.

Hello,

I noticed the following:

In the VB6 sample code TI is suggesting to erase all data rows in pairs with the 0x11 command.

I logged the actual  I2C communication and found that TI EV2300 with bq Evaluation Software is not using 0x11 command in ROM mode to delete the flash!

But I found another command sent 0x12 which is not documented and I do not know the reason of meaning.

Is this another kind of delete flash command? Can you please share the description?

This would be very helpful.

Thanks

Uwe

Bimi,

Update Status should be set to 02 in the golden file, so that Impedance Track is not enabled when the file is loaded into a new device. If Impedance Track is enabled, then the algorithm has control of the FETs and safety features. It is not safe to allow this until after the device has been calibrated.

The bq20z65 cannot support a 1S configuration.

Forum Post: BQ2002T Vts Voltage Threshold Error For Terminating Fast Charge

$

The Data sheet for the BQ2002T states that if the Voltage at Vts is greater than Vtco then fast charge will occur as long as Vbat is less than 2V per cell. And conversely, if Vts is less than Vtco, then fast charge shall terminate.

Vtco is defined as  0.5 * VCC (+/-5%), so in my case VCC = 4.94 V and correspondingly Vtco = 2.47 V (+/- 5%).

The setup is as per the data sheet refereince design for our connections, and we have a typical voltage divider with a resistor connected to VCC on one end (my value is 16.2k) and then  the other end connected to a negative coefficient resistance thermistor value 10 k with VTS connected in between the two circuits.

The problem is that the fast charge is not terminating as per the data sheet specifies. It should behave such that if Vts is less than 2.47 V then the fast charge should terminate and if Vts is above 2.47 volts then fast charge should execute.

This is not the case for me. Starting off with my initial configuration the voltage Vts starts at 1.88 volts and it is still fast charging. I then apply heat to the thermistor and at 1.6 Volts the fast charge terminates according to the LED light that is monitoring the state of charge.

My question is: Why does the Vtco threshold differ to what is stated in the data sheet?

I used the MSP programmer that came with my Jtag connector to read and save the code from my second board into a hex code, and wrote that to the first chip. It appears to work. Problem solved, thanks.

Hi Charles,
Thank you for your reply.

Why does the datasheet specify a duty cycle of 99.5%? I have definitely successfully charged with an input voltage down to 17.3V but did not see a spec for minimum input voltage.

ISET1 looks like it is not a divider so this should be fixed.  The pull down is on the 3.3V instead of pin 11.

I do not see any other issues.

Forum Post: Chemistry File for Chem ID 3154

I am using bqCONFIG to setup the bq27531-G1 gas gauge and the Chem ID I believe I should use is not available in the list. It is also missing from the GaugeStudio Chem ID list.

Chem ID 3154 (LGC: LGJD55EE5456 3000mAh) seems to be the best match to my cell (LGHD55E5456 3000mAh).  This is from the chemistry_selection_table.xls file in the SLUC138 Mathcad Chem Tool folder.

How can I program the gauge to work with this cell?

Thanks!

Will the following products (tagged below) provide proper charging and battery management for a hybrid electric drive train system that runs about 2-10 Amps? We are looking at a few charger circuits and some of the ones we ordered are too small. Any recommendations are appreciated. Batteries will be Li-ion with 6+ cells.

Hello,

I am working towards a (non-host) smart battery with integrated charger, firstly using the bq20z65EVM and the BQ2476x EVM and have used SLUA533 as a guide.  I would like to use the Input Current limit feature provided by the charger, but want to avoid having to use a host.  I understand that the InputCurrentLimit register is volatile and defaults to 256mA when reset.  Is it possible to have the coulomb counter configure the charger using a broadcast, (like the charge current and voltage), or will I need to add a host?

Thank you,

Jeremy.

Hi,

I'm still looking for upgrading firmware from BQ27520-G3 to BQ27520-G4. After some tests and read technical documents again, I understand that I can skip step 1B in bqEASY and generate new data flash with new firmware by folowing step 2. So, "bq27520_3_29.dfi" is not required.

Is that right ?

Thanks.

So we can't get access to it and use it ourselves? That's a shame. Is this going to be fixed any time soon?

Thanks,

Bimi,

You can change Update Status in the bqEVSW on the bq20z60 directly. You have to use the gg file.

The charging and gas gauge/balancing is a two chip solution.  You will have to post in the GG forum to get help on that side.  We do not have any buck boost chragers at this time so one would have to design a boost charger for the 5V input and connect this to one of our chargers.  Look at the bq2413x family

Forum Post: RE: Current sense Resistor.

Hi Onyx,

I use the bq20z65 with a 5mOhm as sense resistor.
I'm currently testing the voltage and the current read from the bq20z65 and the real true one.
So I've regularly decreased the load to increase the current with a few break during the process.

The graphs below shows the result: (the right axe is for the red curve, the left one for the blue curve)

We see that for the 1st graph the difference between the real voltage and the read one increases with the current (due to the heat I think). Is that normal ? At rest (no current) the difference is lower which is good but, is this difference low enough ?

On the second graph, the difference of current increase with the current as soon as we go higher than 12A, I think it's due to the heat. Do you think it will works like that ? The bq20z65 will integrate a wrong current ?

(For my use the bq20z65 will deliver about 14A with sometimes 35A during 10sec.)

Thanks for your answer,

Alex

Roel,

You can choose between two conditions to set the FC bit during charging.

If FC Set%=-1, then the FC bit will set after the voltage and taper current requirements have been met.

If FC Set%= a percentage value, then the FC bit will set after the SOC reaches that percentage value.

I am not sure what you are referring to on the calibration comment.

Forum Post: Cannot complete Impedance learning cycle of BQEasy

Every time I go through the 2 day battery learn process, at the very end it errors out saying the CB bit is not set.

I have the calibration window closed.  SBS is not set to repeat.  I have not changed anything in the dataflash after pressing the Initialize button two days back.  And I keep getting this error at the very end.  Is there something I'm doing wrong here?  The final rest after discharge is 13 hours instead of 5; we let it sit overnight.  Do we have to press the finish button exactly at 5 hours or something?

The CB bit turned on at the beginning of the second charge phase.  And it turned off when we went to the two hour rest after charge.  Does anyone have any ideas what we are doing wrong?
